Show Cone

Create a lovely floral arrangement to hang on a door, wall, or anywhere in your garden!

Add a splash of color to a door, wall, or fence with a hanging flower arrangement.  Containers made for hanging come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including cone shapes such as the one we used.

1.  Choose a container that is easy to hang and will hold water.  IF the container leaks or is metal and may rust, line it with plastic wrap.  Insert a wet piece of floral foam to hold your flower stems.

2.  If you'd like a single flower (or a single stem of several flowers) as the focal point, insert that into the foam, then work the other flowers in around it.  As you place the first flower, keep in mind the size of the arrangement, leaving room for filler flowers above and below the main flower.  We used an orange lily (Lilium) as our focal point.

3.  Once you place the focal flower, insert stems of filler flowers around it.  Tuck in the additional flowers at different angles and heights for the best effect, and use assorted fillers to give your arrange more visual appeal.

4.  Add variety by using flowers with different shapes.  The star shape of the lily's bloom contrasts with the flat heads of yellow yarrow (Achillea) and fringed Shasta daisies (Leucanthemum x superbum).  To create even more textural interest, we used spiky stems of dwarf blue delphiniums.  Their blue color also creates an appealing contrast against the orange lily and yellow yarrow.  Consider such contrasts in your design.,  For a more subtle design, use flowers of similar colors, such as varying shades of pink, purple, or blue.

5.  Embellish your arrangement with foliage.  The arching blades of ornament grass attract the eye and create a sense of visual movement.  We draped Vinca major foliage over one side and added spiky sprigs of silver Artemisia for interest.

Tips for Keeping Cut Flowers Longer

  • Cut flowers in cool, early morning hours.
  • Recut flower stems while they are submerged in water.
  • Store flowers in a cool place for several hours before using them.
  • Place your arrangement in a spot that is sheltered from hot sun and drying winds.
  • Change the water in your arrangement daily or every other day to keep it fresh.
